You need 25 SIGNATURES from DEMOCRATS IN YOUR DISTRICT to qualify for the ballot and it’s recommended to submit up to 40 in the event that some are not valid.

DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO COLLECT YOUR SIGNATURES! Your petitions must be filed with the Secretary of State by 5pm on March 15. Your signatures must be certified by the town clerk prior to being filed with the Secretary of State. Beware, not only the Ides of March, but that March 15 is a Monday and not all town offices are open Monday thru Friday, 9 to 5. Plan ahead what you need to do to meet the deadline.

WARNING: At the very top of your nominating petitions is a blank to write in your party. Don’t forget to do so. The law requires this information to be on each petition, along with the candidate and office name, so that voters know what they are signing. Although the Secretary of State will accept the petition, your signatures could be challenged by a 3rd party if your the field is left blank.

Qualifying Contributions & Seed Money

You have until Wednesday, April 21 to collect your seed money and qualifying contributions. Ask people who are signing your petitions to for a contribution as well.

Qualifying Contributions – You need 60 $5 contributions from REGISTERED VOTERS IN YOUR DISTRICT to qualify for Clean Elections. Remember: In order for a qualify contribution to be valid the voter must sign the “Receipt and Acknowledgement” form. All signatures must be certified by the town clerk prior to submitting your checks to the Ethics Commission

Contributing by Check or Money Order: Make payable to Maine Clean Elections Fund.

Contribution Online: go to https://www5.informe.org/cgi-bin/online/ethics/cleanelection/home.pl and under Get Started Now click Make a Qualifying Contribution to a Candidate.

Seed Money – You can accept up to $100 from any individual (regardless of their party affiliation, regardless of where the live, so long as the funds come from their personal account). You may accept $500 total in seed money. Keep a record of all the seed money, you will have to report each contribution. These checks should be made payable to you or your campaign committee and deposited in your campaign account.
